 Queensland is seeking to attract highly skilled and employable international post graduate alumni in target occupations which are difficult to fill from the local labour market.

Queensland makes nominations for eligible post graduate alumni under the Skilled – Nominated (subclass 190), which allow alumni to live and work in Queensland permanently.

You can apply for this visa through the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) using SkillSelect.

 Eligible occupations

To be eligible, you must have the criteria relevant to an occupation on the relevant Queensland Skilled Occupation List.

Please note that some occupations have limited places.  When these places have been filled, further applications for state nomination cannot be accepted.


International postgraduate alumni seeking nomination from Queensland, must:

  • have completed 100 per cent of a Masters Degree or qualification higher than a Masters Degree at a Queensland institution in Queensland and have graduated within the last 2 years. Your application should include a copy of your Letter from the institution or a copy of awarded qualification from the institution.
  • have an occupation on one of the following skills lists:
  • Masters students must have an offer of employment in your skilled occupation(or closely related)  and evidence of acceptance. The employment opportunity must be for at least 12 months.
  • Have sufficient funds to continue to support your life and dependents in Queensland.
  • Demonstrate commitment to long term settlement in Queensland including living and working in Queensland for at least two years after your visa is granted.
  • Complete and submit an expression of interest through SkillSelect and notify Business and Skilled Migration Queensland of your Expression of Interest number

Applicants who currently hold a Skilled – Graduate (subclass 485) visa are eligible to apply provided they meet the above requirements. Skills Assessments that have been used to secure a 485 visa may have be renewed to apply for an Independent Skilled visa.


  1. Review the eligibility criteria and visa conditions on the DIBP website.
  2. Review the Queensland eligibility criteria to see if you meet the requirements.
  3. Lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) through DIBP’s SkillSelect online Priority is given to applicants who select ‘Queensland’ in SkillSelect as their nominating state
  4. Email Business and Skilled Migration Queensland advising of your EOI number and that you are seeking nomination under the Alumni program..
  5. Business and Skilled Migration Queensland will contact you and request you complete an application form and provide supporting documents.
  6. If you are nominated by Business and Skilled Migration Queensland, you will receive an invitation from DIBP asking you to lodge an application within 60 days of nomination.

Timeframe for nomination: Two weeks
Two weeks once Business and Skilled Migration Queensland has received your application and all of the supporting documents.
