Central West Queensland

Urban centres: Mount Isa, Birdsville, Longreach

Population: 86,000

Post codes: 4477, 4482, 4730, 4735–4736, 4825

Key industries: Mining and resources, and agriculture

Central West Queensland is known for its wide-open skies, breathtaking landscapes, and warm, dry climate. The region is serviced by major highways, a long-distance passenger rail service, and six airports.

This area is home to a multi-million-dollar agriculture industry that includes beef, cotton, grain, and fruit production. The sector contributes nearly one-quarter of the state’s total exports and is part of Queensland’s A$13 billion primary industry sector. The mining and resource sector is also a large part of the region’s export industry – thanks to extensive lead and zinc resources, as well as large reserves of silver, copper, and gold.
