Tara and Thomas Walker – Sugar cane and cattle farmers
First steps in a new life
Tara and Thomas Walker, along with their two sons (Samuel and Joseph), made the life-changing decision to come to Queensland from Hertfordshire, England. They recognised that it was somewhere they could continue to farm, enjoy an outdoor and relaxed lifestyle, maintain family connections, find excellent schooling opportunities for their children, and take advantage of the warm climate.
Thomas says that his extensive background in farming greatly assisted with the process.
“Before moving, I had spent over 20 years managing our family farm in the UK with my brother.”
After an extensive search, viewing many properties and agricultural enterprises, they found the perfect property on the banks of the beautiful Mary River in Patterson.
“Despite needing a lot of work and investment, we could see the potential in the property for cattle and cropping.”
Research is key
The Walkers found the 188 visa process extensive, but in a beneficial way.
“It made us thoroughly research our business plan, to ensure that it was flexible. It’s a big decision to move your family, invest significantly and start a business in a foreign country all at the same time. No matter how much you research, reality can throw up many challenges.”
The future and beyond
The Walkers are proud of their successes so far and will continue to produce cattle and crops, such as sugar cane and soya, and operate their farm-stay for guests.
“As a business, we are always looking forward and researching new markets, along with integrating new technologies and efficiencies for the business. Our next step will be to see how our cattle expansion develops. After our last successful muster, we are incredibly pleased with the results.”
